Director Chosen
Dec 03, 2006

It looks like the WB has chosen Chris Palmer to direct the movie, leaving Wolfgang Petersen as the movies producer. The movies release date is now estimated at 2008.

Warner Brothers has also called the movie 'adult-skewing', which means we might be able to expect this movie to play to the adult themes in the book, instead of being altered to appeal to children. We'll have to wait and see though!

Warner Brothers Press Release
Dec 03, 2004

Warner Brothers has announced that they will be exercising the movie option of 'A Spell for Chameleon'. This means the movie has a 90% chance of being released.

A screenwriter has been found to adapt the first book in fantasy author Piers Anthony's long-running XANTH series of novels. Tim McCanlies (who worked on the movie Secondhand Lions) will turn the novel into a feature screenplay for Warner Bros. Wolfgang Petersen (who recently directect 'Troy') is attached to direct the movie for the studio.

The movie is expected be released sometime in 2006, but there has been no offical ETA yet.

The movie has been dubbed 'Drama / Fantasy' by sources across the globe.

      Commentary:
Different sources seem to call Xanth different things... 'Country', 'planet', 'world', 'land'. This leads me to believe that the majority of this press release is just speculation.

Many sources seem to list Piers for writing credits in the film info; which is unusual. What this might mean is Piers may be on hire to review the scripts during its writing. Piers has already pointed out that he would be happy with 'taking the money and running', but he would not turn down an opportunity to help with the script writing, and hopefully him being mentioned in the writing credits is a hint of what is to come.

Movie Option Announced
Aug 15, 2004

Piers has put notice in his August 2004 newsletter of Warner Brothers buying the movie options for 'A Spell for Chameleon' becoming a movie. Although only about 1 out of 10 movie options are exercised, our hopes are high for SFC. David Benioff is considered to do the screenplay writing, under the production company Radiant productions.

Piers Writes, "Movies.com has notices about two of my movie prospects: On a Pale Horse is listed for 2005 or 2006, and A Spell For Chameleon for 2006. The first is Disney, with Jamie Foxx as producer and star, and the screenwriter Paul Guay. The second is Warner Brothers, the screenwriter David Benioff, the production company Radiant productions. That's most of what I know; I learned of the site when readers started telling me more than I knew about these options. I hope they work out well. If you haven't heard of me yet, 2006 may be your year to discover me. I can hardly wait for the folk who ban Harry Potter for sorcery to discover the panties of Xanth. They will surely freak out."
